The squad is made up of players who already take on responsibility in their clubs and continue to develop in the national jersey. The U21s thus also demonstrate the potential for the future of German football.

U21 EM-Qualification
The next U21 European Championship will take place in the summer of 2027 – this time in Albania and Serbia. It will be a long road to get there: 53 nations will start the qualifying rounds, but only 16 teams will ultimately make it to the big stage. After their strong performance at the 2025 European Championship, where they reached the final, the German U21 team is entering the new campaign with a lot of momentum. But being the favourite does not mean that participation is guaranteed.
Georgia and Greece are two opponents who have shown in recent years that they should not be underestimated. The first two games against Latvia and Greece will immediately show how well the team is starting the new qualifiers and whether the 2025 finalist can be among the frontrunners again in 2027.

Official squad – U21 national team
Coach Antonio Di Salvo has announced the new squad for the German U21 national team. Several newcomers are included, including centre-back Finn Jeltsch (VfB Stuttgart), midfielder Said El Mala (1. FC Köln) and goalkeeper Max Weiß (FC Burnley). Brajan Gruda, who recently impressed in England, is also back in the squad.
The nomination signals a clear change. With a total of 13 debutants and five players from the 2023 U17 European Championship runners-up squad, Di Salvo is focusing on fresh impetus and long-term development. It is noticeable that players such as Paul Wanner, who were recently regulars, are missing this time.
The selection shows that the DFB is pursuing a clear line in the youth sector as well – with perspective, competitiveness and an eye on upcoming tournaments. Fans can look forward to a young team that will start the new U21 phase with commitment and enthusiasm.
