The last encounter

The last meeting between VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Mönchengladbach at the MHPArena (with Stuttgart playing at home) took place on 30 August 2025 in the Bundesliga and ended with a 1–0 home victory for VfB Stuttgart.

VfB Stuttgart started the match with great determination and looked to take control of the game early in front of their home fans. Borussia Mönchengladbach, however, were well organized from the outset and made it difficult for the Swabians to create clear-cut scoring opportunities. As a result, the match developed into a balanced contest, with both teams battling for control in midfield.

As the first half progressed, the game remained intense and closely contested. Stuttgart enjoyed more possession but rarely found the decisive pass needed to break through Gladbach’s compact defensive structure. The visitors, meanwhile, looked to capitalize on counterattacking situations and kept the match open. Despite some promising moments for both sides, neither team was able to find the breakthrough before halftime, and the score remained 0–0.

After the restart, Borussia Mönchengladbach enjoyed their strongest spell of the match and created several promising opportunities. Kevin Stöger missed a great chance to give the visitors the lead, while Robin Hack tested VfB goalkeeper Alexander Nübel with a dangerous effort shortly afterwards. Stuttgart struggled to find their rhythm during this period but gradually improved as the second half went on.

As time passed, Stuttgart increased the pressure on Gladbach’s defense. The decisive moment finally arrived in the 79th minute. Following a short corner routine, Jamie Leweling delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, where substitute Chema Andrés rose highest and headed the ball into the net to make it 1–0. The MHPArena erupted in celebration as the hosts took a late lead.

In the closing stages, Gladbach pushed forward in search of an equalizer and created one final promising opportunity. However, Florian Neuhaus was denied by an excellent save from Alexander Nübel in stoppage time. Stuttgart then successfully defended their narrow advantage until the final whistle.

As a result, VfB Stuttgart secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach in their first home match of the Bundesliga season. In what was an evenly matched contest overall, Chema Andrés’ late goal proved to be the difference, earning the Swabians three important points in front of their home supporters.
