The last encounter

The last meeting between VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund at the MHPArena (with Stuttgart playing at home) took place on 4 April 2026 in the Bundesliga and ended in a 2–0 victory for Borussia Dortmund, leaving VfB Stuttgart empty-handed.

In front of their home crowd, VfB Stuttgart took the initiative from the start and controlled large portions of the game. The Swabians combined well in possession, pressed Dortmund high up the pitch, and repeatedly advanced into dangerous areas. However, they often lacked the final touch and precision in the attacking third, meaning that many of their promising moves did not result in clear-cut scoring opportunities.

As the first half progressed, Stuttgart remained the more active side. Borussia Dortmund struggled to create attacking momentum and spent much of the opening period focused on defensive duties. The hosts enjoyed significantly more possession and territorial advantage but were unable to convert their superiority into goals. As a result, despite an encouraging performance from VfB, the teams went into halftime with the score still level at 0–0.

After the break, the match became more balanced. Dortmund settled into the game and improved defensively, while Stuttgart continued to search for openings in the BVB back line. For long stretches, both teams neutralized each other, and clear scoring chances remained scarce at either end of the pitch. As the match entered its final stages, a goalless draw seemed the most likely outcome.

Stuttgart pushed forward in search of a late winner and gradually took greater risks. However, the decisive moments came at the other end. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Karim Adeyemi capitalized on one of Dortmund’s few opportunities and scored to give the visitors a 1–0 lead. Just two minutes later, Julian Brandt finished off a swift counterattack to make it 2–0 and put the result beyond doubt.

The late goals caused great disappointment inside the sold-out MHPArena, as Stuttgart had been the more proactive team for much of the match. Dortmund, however, showed ruthless efficiency in front of goal and took full advantage of their opportunities during stoppage time.

As a result, VfB Stuttgart suffered a 2–0 defeat despite an overall committed and impressive performance. Borussia Dortmund decided a closely contested top-of-the-table clash with a dramatic late double strike and left Stuttgart with three valuable points.
