The last encounter

The last meeting between VfB Stuttgart and 1. FSV Mainz 05 at the MHPArena (with Stuttgart playing at home) took place on 26 October 2025 in the Bundesliga and ended with a 2–1 home victory for VfB Stuttgart.

VfB Stuttgart took control of the match early in front of their home supporters and enjoyed the majority of possession. However, the hosts initially struggled to break down Mainz’s compact defensive setup. The best chances of the first half fell to Jamie Leweling and Deniz Undav, but neither player was able to find the net. Mainz also remained a threat, creating dangerous moments on the counterattack.

Shortly before halftime, the visitors took the lead. After a handball in the penalty area, Nadiem Amiri confidently converted the resulting penalty in the 41st minute to make it 1–0 for Mainz. Stuttgart responded almost immediately. In first-half stoppage time, Chris Führich unleashed a superb long-range effort to level the score at 1–1. The teams then went into the break with everything still to play for.

After halftime, Stuttgart significantly increased the pressure. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side pushed forward relentlessly in search of a second goal, while Mainz defended with discipline and limited the number of clear-cut opportunities. Nevertheless, VfB remained the more proactive team and controlled large parts of the game.

Just as the match appeared to be heading for a draw, the decisive moment arrived in the 79th minute. Alexander Nübel launched a long ball from his own half that caught the Mainz defense by surprise. Deniz Undav won the race to the ball and calmly lifted a delicate chip over the advancing Robin Zentner to give Stuttgart a 2–1 lead.

In the closing stages, Mainz threw everything forward in pursuit of an equalizer and came close during a lengthy period of stoppage time. Nikolas Veratschnig narrowly missed the target, allowing Stuttgart to preserve their advantage. Alexander Nübel and the VfB defense then successfully held off the visitors until the final whistle.

As a result, VfB Stuttgart secured a hard-fought 2–1 home victory over 1. FSV Mainz 05. After initially falling behind, the Swabians completed the comeback thanks to goals from Chris Führich and Deniz Undav, earning three important points in front of 59,000 spectators at the MHPArena.
