A look at history

The historic rivalry between Hamburger SV (HSV) and SV Werder Bremen is characterised by numerous encounters that have taken place in the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and other competitions. In 124 encounters to date, the balance has shifted slightly in Werder Bremen’s favour, with HSV winning 40 matches, Werder Bremen recording 48 victories and 36 matches ending in a draw.

The matches are often characterised by high intensity, great commitment and emotional moments, which makes them particularly appealing to fans of both clubs. Werder Bremen, in particular, regularly impresses with their pace, attacking drive and tactical flexibility, whilst HSV seek to counter this with structure, individual quality and team unity.

These clashes represent two clubs steeped in tradition from northern Germany, which have built up one of the most defining rivalries in German football over the decades. Whilst Werder Bremen consistently impresses with sporting success and an attacking style of play, HSV looks back on a long and successful history. As a result, these encounters remain a particularly emotional and tradition-rich chapter in the clubs’ history.
